The next morning, I bolted upright in bed, my heart pounding like a mallet against my ribcage. The remnants of a dream clung to me with a clammy, insidious touch as I reached out into the darkness. My hand found fur, and I exhaled a shaky breath. Misty was here, safe.

"What in the—Blair, what's your deal?" Misty's grumpy mew cut through the thick silence of the room.

"I had a nightmare," I whispered, pulling her close. My arms enveloped her warm, soft body. "You were catnapped by Vera."

Misty protested with a disgruntled purr that teetered on the edge of annoyance. "And you think clinging to me like plastic wrap is going to prevent that?" she huffed.

"It might," I said defensively, loosening my grip but not letting her go entirely.

She acquiesced with a gentle headbutt under my chin. "Fine, but just for a minute."

I stroked her back gently until her body relaxed in my arms. Once Misty's breathing steadied into the rhythm of sleep, I laid her down beside me and rose from the bed. The disquiet from the dream hovered over me like a specter as I readied myself for work.

The shower did little to wash away the unease, and as I stood under the spray, I couldn't help but wonder about Ravenwood. I considered what Vera could possibly be up to. If she was responsible for the missing familiars, there wasn’t a good reason for it. If she wasn’t behind it, then who—or what—was?

I shook my head and pulled on my work clothes: a warm yellow sweater and a simple pair of jeans.

Misty watched me from her spot on the bed, her blue eyes following my every move as if she could sense my disquiet. "You're thinking about it again, aren't you?" she accused softly.

"I can't help it," I admitted while lacing up my shoes. "I keep thinking there's something we're not seeing—some clue we've overlooked."

"Or maybe," Misty stretched languidly, "you're letting a bad dream get to your head."

"Possibly," I conceded as I grabbed my bag and keys.

I gave Misty one more glance before heading out the door. She settled into her usual windowsill perch with a yawn that seemed dismissive of supernatural threats.

As I locked up behind me, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were both being watched from the shadows. Ravenwood would show its hand soon enough—I just hoped we were ready when they did.
